Story

In 2004, I went to Indonesia and saw many street children at traffic lights. I was very sad, very sad to see many children wasting their future on the streets and unable to attend school. (Chaim Fetter). Chaim Fetter, a man from the Netherlands who came to Indonesia in 2004, felt compassion when he saw many children working on the streets of Lombok.

This was also a turning point in Chaim's life, where he was moved to help these street children by starting the Yayasan Peduli Anak (Child Care Foundation) in 2005. Now, Chaim has been fighting for 18 years to save street children, orphans, and abandoned children in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). I didn’t go to school because I didn’t have shoes, a uniform, a bag, or books. (Okta).

Okta (13 years old) is an orphan who dropped out of school to become the breadwinner for his family. He works as a laborer in a glass-cutting shop. His wages are minimal, but from there he supports the livelihood of his mother and younger sibling. In addition, Okta also works as a courier near his home after his shift at the glass-cutting shop.

Okta lives with his mother and younger sibling in a shack. Their living conditions are very poor. In fact, Okta and his sibling have been suffering from scabies for several years. Their legs and bodies are covered in sores and pus. When the itching strikes, Okta and his sibling cannot resist scratching all over their bodies.

A similar fate is not only experienced by Okta. Many children in Sumbawa also live in misery. Sumbawa is an island, part of NTB, Indonesia. On this island, many children are abandoned and live in poverty. This situation is worsened by the geographical conditions of Sumbawa Island, where access to proper education is also far. This problem threatens their future, and the chances of escaping the cycle of suffering are getting smaller.
